My family moved to Lackawanna county when I was 12. Coming from Staten Island, my family came here in hopes of giving me and my siblings a better life as everything in New York was getting more and more expensive. We’re a middle classed hard working family. I’m now 25, I work in the field of construction.
Moving to Pennsylvania is a harsh adjustment. The mentality of the people from here is unlike any other. Every town has a few nice homes with the rest ran down. The roads and sidewalks are atrocious. Social life here is undesirable. There is absolutely nothing to do other than drink, go for walks, hike and get aggravated going out. Crime here has increased tremendously over the past few years with the migration after Covid. With the area being so affordable in the past it brought the worst crowds of people. The area truly is grey leaving most people feeling stuck, depressed and hopeless.
Our once tight knit family has slowly drifted as our environment has consumed us.

Scranton is a rundown city with poor paying jobs and nothing to do. The residents are mostly rude with poor social skills, minimal education and many have serious drug and alcohol problems so it's not a good place to try to date or make friends. Most of natives have never left Scranton and are unfriendly to anyone not from the area. Many residents seem hopeless and depressed but I honestly don't blame them. Property taxes are high despite poorly performing schools, rundown neighborhoods with abandoned houses and potholes everywhere. To make things worse the crime has gotten worse than ever and even homeless camps, drug users, etc. in many parts of the woods and Lackawanna River and they leave trash everywhere, I've even seen used needles in parks and in the woods. There have been multiple shootings in the city this year alone and gang activity, plus bad weather mostly all year.

I was born and raised in the west side of Scranton. I like the people more than anything else. The landlords are scum, for lack of a better word, the cops are horrible, the property tax is atrocious. The people are what makes it and the government forgets that.

It was an idyllic place to grow up in some ways: family-oriented, lots of neighborhood kids, simple/traditional lifestyle you don’t see much anymore. But even as a kid, the place depressed me. There’s a gray cloud that seems to hang over the city. People clearly feel it but aren’t aware of it, turning to drugs and alcohol to cope. Buildings reflect the internal state of most: crumbling, in disrepair, hopeless. A glimmer of what used to/could be, but lacks the joy and life needed to actualize the potential. No one there is thriving. Most people are just hanging on, and they couldn’t say why. It makes me sad just thinking about it thousands of miles away. When I go there to visit family, I can’t breathe. If you manage to wake from the dream and escape the vortex, you have a certain indomitable spirit that can be attributed to surviving in Scranton. You can handle hard things, push through, keep going when others quit. It does make you stronger, but you must leave to make use of it.

Well I have been here all my life and watched this city change not for the better diversity is not a good thing you can expect a whole bunch people from such drastic differences in language, culture and morals to get along peacefully it doesn't work

I like how everything is close to each other in Scranton. However, sometimes I feel unsafe because of all the local shootings.

I grew up in Scranton, and came back to have a family here. It has changed a lot but I believe is still a great place to live.

I enjoyed growing up with the neighborhood kids my age. I enjoyed going to the parks and going bowling with friends. Now that I am older, I would like to see people in the administration that want to better the city and make it more appealing to live in. I would like to see streets paved in a timely manner. I would like to see our parks maintained as they were. I would like to see the Nay Aug pool put back and maintained. I would like to see less crime in the city. I would like to see more homes restored instead of condemned and taken down. I would like to see more for the kids in the area to do.

Scranton has almost everything you could ask for. Scranton is very diverse and although is a city, has a very safe feeling.

Scranton is a small town in north eastern PA. I was born here, I have lived here for 26 years. My relationship with my hometown has changed over the years but it will always be a familiar, simple place. Covid had a huge negative impact on our town. A lot of local businesses closed which was really sad for all of us. I would like to see less addiction and homelessness. I would like to see better resources for those who struggle to pay their bills and feed their children.

How is this place rated a 'B'? It should be much lower. It is a run down, crime-ridden town with nothing to do. Really, there is nothing to do but go visit family and drink. And really, that's all anyone does.

Scranton is a decent smaller city to raise a family (despite the flaky schools), but for those without children it can be boring. I grew up in the area and plan on remaining until I complete my undergraduate degree, but I often find myself wishing I was in an area with more activities and community involvement. I do see hope in Scranton's future, but right now it still needs some help. Additionally, the public transportation is lacking, leaving much to be desired. As someone who prefers it or walking compared to owning a car, it's disappointing.

Scranton is a city with a lot of potential. A lot of people give it a lot of hate but I believe it is getting back to what it once was. Low cost of living and is safe from crime besides some areas. I have noticed more and more younger people moving here every year because of the low cost of living. The downtown area is getting better with more stores, bars and restaurants opening up. All we need is more family sustaining jobs. Most successful people in the area are business owners, doctors, and lawyers. If they aren’t one of the 3 they most likely work from home or commute to Philly or nyc.

terrible healthcare for disabled Black/hispanic people. And they only care about you if you're white and cis n straight. all my life i've lived here and I haven't gotten proper treatment for my health because of my disease and my race. I could be half dead n they'd only give me Tylenol extra strength

Scranton has traumatized me - here's one little fact that will tell you volumes: the national average for RAPES is lower than the Scranton average for RAPE crimes. Yuck. Why? Because this is the land of no one leaving, no opportunity, long grey cold winters with nothing to do. Job opportunities suck and people have a really backward mentality, not to mention some awful accents. Schools are akin to inner-city Detroit or Philly. Do the math, facts don't lie.

Good mix of city and small town vibes. There’s malls near and lots a restaurants. People are generally normal and keep to themselves. Italian festival is big and a great way to try new food.
