The wife and I trying to plan a long- weekend getaway for the weekend of Nov. 11, after we get through a far-too-busy fall for both of us. We really want to visit Hatteras Island, preferably in the tri-villages area. This might be too early for an accurate answer, but, should we try to visit? Our hearts have been broken by the accounts of damage and loss, and we just want to be as sensitive as possible. The area means a lot to us and we'd be happy to do our part to stimulate the economy, and bring some items for donations too. So, should we?

I know what you mean. However, I'm heading down to RWS 10/22, and am looking forward to it. I'm bringing my donations also and I'm hitting the beach for fishing, eating at my favorite places if open, and spending my money on an island I love
Enjoy your trip!

Well, I think we will give some rental agencies a call and see what we can find. While we need a break, I know that the residents need a break even more. (it's not even close I know, which is why I was a little hesitant I think) Thanks for the input.

Getting guests back into the tri-villages and helping everyone get back into a routine of living, and making a living, is a good thing. RWS has been a somewhat isolated place until the road re-opened this week. Having guests back in will bring a sense of normalcy, get new faces in the area who are not care-worn by the reconstruction, and hope for the future returning to normal. So, I would reccommend coming on down.

Just getting the road open is a big break for everyone on HI. I spoke with a local lady who had set up a 'date' with her husband for the evening after the road opened to go up to Nags Head to get away. Just having that freedom is a big break. And with winter coming, the usual winter break will be there.

how is the place coming together?

The piles of torn out building materials by NC12 are abating to a degree but not totally. Still plenty of bits and pieces to pick up; seems like most of the applicances are that have been put out have been picked-up. I would expect this to continue at a slowly decreasing level for a while.

Some insurance settlements are reportedly slow so this will stretch repairs out for a while. Considering the months and months for usual disaster repairs in other areas to move along (and years like in New Orleans), I'd say it is going pretty well. Fortunately, there was not a lot of heavy destruction with things torn apart by wind or fast moving water, so structures are mostly intact. It's mostly tearing out and replacing floors and siding and drywall due to flooding.

And, some areas show very little damage, so it's not in 100% of RWS. There are a few feet of height variation in different areas so that made the effects different on different streets.

AND, the skeeters have not been bad (not much beyond normal, IMO) since early last week. The cool snap seems to have helped.

We are heading down the 22nd, with donations also. plus we thought to help with the economy, we would purchase food for the food bank from the groceries on HI. I know it would cost a little more than buying it up here and bring it down, but it would help the businesses there also.
staying on the island will help, just have to remember to help when needed and not when it is not needed. And above all respect the people who live there, and their privacy. I have to remind myself that because I constany take photographs, the good with the bad and I hope I never offend anyone.
It is a beautiful wonderful place, with wonderful strong kind people who need our support. just my two cents...

I also would like an update on what kinds of donations are most needed. It will be 3 weeks or so until we would get down. I would love to begin to compile some items for the trip. Also, is there a go-to agency or spot, where contributions can be left? Resdidents, please know that there are a lot of us who really want to visit and help in some fashion! Hang in there.

Our group will be there 11/12-11/19. If there is a "list" of most needed donation type needed and where to drop off (i.e. - food one place , clothing another ...... ) we'd appreciate that info also. Staying on Hatteras @ Avon but travel from Tri-villages to Ocraco*ke throughout the week.
